Thursday 17th September 2009

When Room 2 arrived at Bethlehem School we had a game of seeweed. It started off with just Room 2 but then Room 9 joined in as well. When we were told to go into the hall and find our buddies it ended up that it was just Kade and I again. This meant that we had a ton of work to to between only 2 people. Our goal was to complete the black line on our map and have to robot go over it. We had our heads down the whole time and didn't stop for anything. We had a quick morning tea break and when we were refilled we set back to work. About 30minutes after morning tea we had finished the black line and went to look for a robot to try on it. We found one, put our programming onto it and put it on our map. It worked on most parts but when the line got to thin the robot couldn't follow it. Next time we need to thicken up our line so the robots can follow it the whole way through our map. I can't wait untill next time!

Forest Floor Maps

Thursday 3rd September 2009

After the bike to Bethlehem School we were ready to work. When we got there lots of people were dressed up as book characters. After we'd had a look at all of their costumes we headed over to Room 9 where we did our blogs. We then had a quick morning tea break and went on with our maps. Our group got some of the black lines drawn on our map and I had made a little bit of the jail and a few huts. Our goal for next Thursday is to finish drawing the lines on the map. The other things on the map like the rabbit holes, troll, witches house also need to be made. Our time at Bethlehem went so quickly, before we knew it were back on our bikes heading to OIS.

Robots Again!

Thursday 27 August 2009

When Room 2 got to our school we had only 1 and a half hours to do our work. We had to work on our maps. We stuck the map together with sellotape and brainstormed our thoughts for the things on it. Kade brainstormed ideas for the jail and Juliette brainstormed ideas for the witches house, the rabbit holes and huts. We took a quick break for morning tea and then set back to work. Unfortunately Kade snapped his pencil so we had to stick it back together with sellotape. By this time our time was up and Room 2 had to bike back to school. Now we had to wait until next time…

Map Stuff

Thursday 13th August 2009

Today, when my class (Room 2) arrived after the huge bike ride, it was just me and Kade because Juliette was away. We started to make some trees and people for our map. The one person we made turned into a cat-man. It was really hard to get the paper into the right shapes for the body of our cat-man. Scrunched up paper seemed to be the best shape for it. Next we tried to figure out what we were going to make the jail out of. We decided to make it out of toothpicks and ice block sticks. The trees we made were made out of newspaper and coloured paper. Time went by really quickly because we were concentrating on our work and soon my class were on their bikes ready to leave. Man, I can’t wait until next Thursday!

Here We Come Robots!

Thursday was the day we had to face the big bike to Bethlehem School. Yup! You guessed it, we looked a little stupid. I mean you don't see 30 kids biking along the roads every day of the week do you? When we eventually arrived at Bethlehem school after the few hiccups we had along the way we were ready to start. We were lead into the newly built hall that smelt like paint. First, before Juliette, Kade and I could use the computer software, we had to learn how to programme the actual NXT unit. We managed to succeed in this task. The next challenge was to try and make the robot start on 1 line, stop on the next and make a beeping sound. We managed to complete the task. Next we had to programme the robot to do a figure of 8 around two empty milk bottles. We didn't manage to do this as we ran out of time.

At morning tea time we played bull rush with some of the Year 6's. Time went by really fast and before we knew it we were back in the hall working on our forest floor plan. We wrote down the things that we thought we should include then set to work drawing our plan. Kade drew an amazing jail and Juliette drew some cool huts, aliens and paths. Now all we need to do is make the stuff in 3D.

Our time was up at Bethlehem for this week but I can't wait for next time. Oh no! Now it's time for the long bike back...

All by myself!!

Last Thursday Rm2 from O.I.S went to Bethlehem School to work with our Rm9 buddies on robots. We had to bike up all these hills and down the road untill finally, we reached our destination. "Ummm... Room 2, where are the robots?" Oops, we forgot to pack them. Thankfully, one of the parents was able to race back and get them. Eventually we were ready to start. Unlucky for me, my two buddies weren't at school so I was 'lonered'. I ended up going with Kendall and Sam's group. Our challenge was to programme the small NXT robot to go around an empty milk bottle. We managed to succeed after a little bit of trial and error. When it was morning tea time our class was climbing over the playground like ants. Some of the Bethlehem kids didn't seem to approve of this. Then it was time for the bike back to our school.
That was a great day and I can't wait untill next Thursday...
